Alabama Rot

Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy (CRGV), also known as "Alabama Rot" has been around since the 1980s in the USA. Since December 2012 a few cases have been confirmed in a number of counties throughout the UK.

Although reports come from people that have walked their dogs in the countryside/forested areas, the cause of the disease remains unknown.

Dogs reported with the disease suffer from skin lesions and/or kidney failure. The skin lesions are symptoms of the disease rather than as a result of injury. They tend to be below the knee/elbow and look like red swellings or ulcers. As the disease progresses dogs start to vomit, become lethargic and anorexic.

If you are concerned about your dog it is important to make an appointment with us as soon as possible. The sooner treatment starts, the better the outcome, as it can prove fatal.
